Character.AI 申請破產保護，擬向迪士尼出售部分資產

Character.AI, one of the first breakout startups of the generative AI boom, has filed for bankruptcy and is selling some of its assets to Disney. The company, which builds various online bots for users to chat or roleplay with, has faced mounting scrutiny and lawsuits over the safety of its chatbots, but has continued releasing updates and products in recent months.

Character 在星期一發表的新聞稿及網誌文章中表示，已在美國申請第 11 章破產保護，以促成公司及其資產的出售。公司表示：「過去一年，面對重大的法律、監管及營運阻力，我們已採取切實措施維持並改善業務。」

Along with Anand, Disney also said it expected “a number of Character.AI’s technical team” to join the company. The move resembles a kind of “acquihire” strategy that has become increasingly common in Silicon Valley as a means of hoovering up startups’ talent that sometimes leaves the original company struggling to survive. Character.AI has survived it once already — Google spent over $2 billion to hire away much of the company’s talent, including co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, in 2024.

Character 表示，預計出售程序將於十一月下旬或十二月上旬完成，期間計劃繼續營運各項服務，包括付費訂閲服務。不過，公司警告，若未能出現合適的競標，「平台將會逐步停止營運」。公司表示：「在處理這項程序期間，為社羣維持安全且具吸引力的使用體驗仍是首要任務。」
